Responding to the invitation of The Sculpture Center, the Erie Art Museum, and the Art Department of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, 75 artists teaching at 35 art schools and art departments of college and universities of Ohio and western Pennsylvania self-selected to submit work for consideration for a curated exhibition in summer 2011. From this work, curator David Carrier, noted author and critic, chose a curatorial theme and six artists to include in exhibitions at the Erie Art Museum and The Sculpture Center. The artists are:

David Carrier writes about his selection:
This recent art made in our region builds upon the achievement of post-minimalism, in ways that acknowledge the achievement of Jessica Stockholder, Jackie Winsor and other post- historical sculptors. Employing banal materials to achieve aesthetic results, these artists mostly avoid direct figurative references. Often employing a grid to structure their works, frequently making architectural references these artists are interested in what you find at the intersection between nature and the urban environment. Without making explicit political statements, they all are concerned to demonstrate how three-dimensional visual art can be critical of our everyday worldview, as manifested in visual structures. In that way, I believe, they are heirs to the minimalist tradition of the 1960s. What aesthetic experience is possible, they are asking, in a country that, though no longer so arrogantly self-confident, has a rich artistic tradition upon which to build. (October 2010)

sculptureX.org is a long-term, mutually beneficial collaboration among all the art schools and departments of this region. Its purpose is three-fold. It is a means to bring greater public recognition of the extraordinary talents of the artists teaching in these schools and art departments with the goal of increasing interest in Ohio and western Pennsylvania art programs by potential students and their parents. It is a way to find with ease the work and websites of the 3-D artists who teach at these schools and departments. Finally, it is a tool for the schools and departments to husband ever scarcer resources while sharing the talents and particular skills of the professors across this area. The well-attended and well-received The State of Sculpture symposium at the Cleveland Institute of Art on November 6, 2010, is a perfect example of how Ohio and Pennsylvania institutions may collaborate for the benefit of the region.

Review in the Erie Times News by Karen Rene Merkle, 'Sculpture X' explores limitless sculpture.

SculptureX.org serves as a catalyst for collaborations among arts institutions within a short day’s drive of Cleveland, OH and Erie, PA.  The mission of SculptureX is three-fold: to bring greater awareness to the work of college art faculty in this region; to share scarce resources; and to increase student interest and parent awareness of the art programs of the region.
